A gown has to be properly cleaned first. Sealing an unclean dress in a box guarantees the stains you cannot see today will be permanent and brown when the box is opened, so preservation is never sold as a shortcut around the cleaning.

The gown is then packed with acid-free tissue at every fold, supported so the weight of a beaded bodice is not resting on the fabric, and boxed in acid-free materials. Ordinary tissue and cardboard are acidic and will yellow silk on their own.

Store the finished box somewhere with a stable temperature, off the floor and out of an attic or garage. Heat cycling and damp do more damage over a decade than the wedding day ever did.

Is a vacuum-sealed box better?+
Not necessarily. Fabric needs some air exchange, and a hard vacuum seal can set permanent creases at the fold lines. We pack for support and use acid-free materials rather than pulling a vacuum.
Can I open the box later to look at the dress?+
Yes, and people do, usually for a daughter's fitting. Handle it with clean dry hands and repack it with the tissue in the same places, or bring it back and we will repack it.
