What gown preservation actually is — and what it is not

Preservation is not just a box. It is a cleaning-plus-storage process designed to stop the chemical reactions that destroy fabric over time, then seal the gown in conditions that keep those reactions from restarting. Done properly, it lets a gown survive decades in heirloom condition. Done as a cheap upsell — a quick clean and a non-archival box — it can actually accelerate yellowing. The materials matter enormously.

Why gowns yellow and how preservation prevents it

Two enemies age a stored gown: residual stains and acidic materials. Invisible sugar and body-oil residues oxidize into brown patches. And ordinary cardboard and tissue are acidic — over years they off-gas and leach acid into the fibers touching them, creating the classic yellow lines you see on improperly stored vintage dresses. Real preservation addresses both: a thorough clean first, then only acid-free, archival materials in contact with the gown.

Our preservation process

• Clean first, always. A gown is never preserved dirty. Every removable stain is treated before boxing, because sealing a stain in is sealing in the very thing that causes long-term damage.
• Acid-free, museum-grade materials. We use archival tissue and an acid-free box — the same class of materials museums use for textile storage.
• Proper folding and bust support. The gown is folded with buffered tissue at every crease to prevent permanent fold lines, and the bodice is supported so it holds its shape.
• Inspection certificate. You receive documentation of the gown's condition at the time of preservation.

How to store the preserved box at home

Even the best preservation box needs the right environment. Keep it somewhere with a stable temperature and low humidity — a closet inside the conditioned part of your home, not an attic, garage, or basement where heat and damp swing wildly. Store the box flat, and resist the urge to open and handle the gown often; every time it is unsealed, it is exposed to air and oils again.

Can a much older gown still be preserved?

Often, yes. We have cleaned and re-preserved gowns that were boxed improperly decades ago, undoing some of the yellowing and giving them archival storage going forward. Whether a particular gown can be fully restored depends on how long the oxidation has set, which is why an in-person inspection is the honest first step. A practical tip from our team

After your gown is preserved, write the wedding date and the gown details on the outside of the box and note where you have stored it — families lose track of which box holds what across decades and moves. Store it flat in a temperature-stable interior closet, never an attic or garage. If you ever want to actually wear or display the gown again, have it professionally re-opened and inspected rather than unsealing it yourself, so it can be re-preserved properly afterward.
